Kate & David’s surprise Wedding

FILED IN: Weddings

Chandeliers, Chesterfields and Mended Hearts

As I slowly hoisted the studio flashes up towards the high warehouse ceilings of The Smoked Garage (Brisbane) I felt the rush of excitement and nerves that come in the quiet before a wedding. The gorgeous tiled floors currently unobstructed by guests yet to arrive, reflect the thousands of the fairy lights draping the walls. Soon this space would fill, the mosaic of lights covered and the silence broken but for now this amazing space was just for the Bride & Groom and myself.

Kate and David; a more humble, kind and beautiful couple you will not meet. Dressed in a full length sequin gown that caught the light like star dust, Kate looked radiant and absolutely owned this glamorous 1920s parlour. Not often but every once in a while every single element of a shoot fits so perfectly into place that the results are truly magical. Shooting Kate & David’s wedding portraits before the guests arrival was one of those times. The beautiful couple, their outfits, the Chesterfield, the décor, the chesterfield, the lighting, the space, did I mention the Chesterfield? and the time to capture it all. MAGICAL!

As the light faded outside the guests started to arrive, each in turn marveling at the stunning venue and beautiful bride. Invited on the pretense of an engagement party, Kate and David had gathered their closest friends and family together to share with them their special day. With their guests believing the couple were eloping overseas (actually the honeymoon) all believed they would be missing the union of these two incredible people.

To say the announcement that this little party was about to become a wedding was well received would be the understatement of the year. There were “woops!”, Cheers, whistles, laughter and quite a few tears. There was such a wonderful sense of love and family in the room that you really had to experience to believe.

For me though the most special part of the night were the speeches. When friends, mothers, fathers and in this case sons, who despite being afraid, are able to stand up in front a room full of people and profess their love, hopes and praise of the people that matter most to them. It was such an incredibly brave, grown up moment for two boys on the cusp of becoming men. Even without all the fairy lights, chandeliers and sequins it was magical. Bravo!

A huge thankyou to Kate and David for inviting me to share in this incredible night. It is an incredible privilege to be a part of such special events like this. It’s truly an inspiration to be a better Father, Son and Husband.

Thank you.

Tim
