In a small side street in Greenslopes, under a blue windswept sky people were starting to stir. There was the sound of deck chairs scraping on porches, people peered out of windows and dog walkers were stopping and taking out their ear buds to stare. Six young men dressed in ao dai (Traditional Vietnamese attire) were making their way down the street, their arms filled with gifts including an entire roast pig. This was not a usual sight on a quiet Saturday morning. This was something very special.
Before a marriage it is Vietnamese tradition that the groom asks the bride’s family for her hand in marriage and to celebrate the union of the two families while honouring their parents, family and ancestors. This is done through an offering of gifts followed by a tea and candle ceremony with the couples closest family and friends.
After Connor greeted and honoured Tiffany’s parents, there was a buzz of anticipation as everyone waited for Tiffany. And then she entered. Wearing red traditional ao dai and a Khan Dong, she looked absolutely breathtaking. The love and connection between her and Connor was instantly apparent, their smiles, cheeky glances and laughter were infectious.
It is always such a pleasure to participate in and be a part of a family celebration of any kind. Weddings and Engagements of course hold a very special place in our hearts but we are so incredibly grateful when we are able to share in traditions and ceremonies that are different from our own. Love is such a beautiful, wonderful thing and to be able to see how others honour and celebrate it is such a blessing.
